‘Glee’ Recap: The Gang All Fight, Kiss & Make Up (Plus Demi Lovato Returns) in “Trio”
The seniors at McKinley High are already getting sentimental for their impending graduation. (We seriously don’t think Tina’s fully prepared for this emotional roller coaster. It’s Season 5 — has she looked into therapy yet?) Between their nostalgia and the bickering between former roommates Rachel (Lea Michele) and Santana (Naya Rivera), tensions are running pretty high this episode.
Will (Matthew Morrison) teaches American history half-heartedly for a few seconds before getting interrupted by wifey, Emma (Jayma Mays). The two skip away to have sex in the faculty lounge but get caught by Becky (Lauren Potter). They end up in Sue’s (Jane Lynch) office, where she admonishes them for what is, in real life, a fireable offense. But when they confess that they’re trying to get pregnant, it’s adorable.
Suddenly, Blaine (Darren Criss), Sam (Chord Overstreet) and Tina (Jenna Ushkowitz) launch into “Jumpin’ Jumpin'” by Destiny’s Child (original line up), apropos of nothing. When Will tells them it’s not good for nationals, they replay with a smile that they just wanted to perform the song for fun. But the smiles disappear when Will reminds them that they’re graduating and going their separate ways soon and Tina starts to cry.
Rachel is in the midst of rehearsing with a full band when Elliott (Adam Lambert) arrives with tea, dry cleaning and a key to his apartment. Flashback to her moving in with him after showing up unannounced on his doorstep. We can already see that she’s a terrible roommate. She calls him her “best gay” and he hates it. Despite that, when he hands her the lyrics and sheet music for them to perform Heart‘s “Barracuda,” Rachel announces, “This is the beginning of a beautiful friendship.”
Tina walks in on Blaine and Sam trying on graduation gowns and caps, which again leads her to burst into tears, lamenting that their friendships will fall apart after graduation. The boys promise to be friends for life and plan to do something epic to remember. For them, this translates into an overnight lock-in at the high school.
Emma tells Will sadly that she took a pregnancy test and it was negative. Will, a little too excitedly, says they have an appointment for a fertility clinic and Emma scurrries away. Coaches Beiste (Dot-Marie Jones) and Sue advise Will to relax and stop trying so hard with the baby-making business.
On the intercom, Sue announces the first annual senior lock-in promptly before announcing that it’s subsequently been cancelled, much to Tina’s devastation. She writhes on the hallway floor and wails, again prompting the boys to comfort her. They decide to have their own lock-in, which is enough to get her off the floor.
At the NYC loft, Santana fusses with her weave thinking that Kurt (Chris Colfer) is the noise at the door, but it’s Elliott arriving to pick up Rachel’s sheet music. Santana barrages him with complaints about Rachel. Santana’s pissed to hear she’s moved in with Elliott and plots something.
Tina, Blaine and Blondie break into the high school where they then enjoy a Breakfast Club-style reenactment of Simple Minds‘ “Don’t You (Forget About Me)”. Naturally, wacky hijinks ensue before the kids are busted by Becky. She tells them she climbed in through the window and has been drinking energy drinks. She then blackmails them into playing Twister with her.
Meanwhile, at Will’s house, he’s painting a nursery. He gives Emma a speech about their love before they launch into a rendition of “Danny’s Song” by Loggins And Messina. Her giant yellow nightgown is just too erotic for words.
Blaine and Becky play Twister alone while the other two appear to have disappeared. It turns out Tina and Sam are hooking up. Blaine catches them and feels betrayed and runs off.
Rachel arrives to work at the Spotlight Diner to see Santana and Elliott running lines. Everyone’s betrayed all over the place. The girls then sing Laura Branigan‘s “Gloria,” as requested by a customer whose birthday it is, whom we never see. Santana and Rachel try to outdo each other while simultaneously pulling at Elliott. They try to make the poor guy pick between them. He says that until they reconcile, he’s no longer in the band and not running lines with Santana.
The next day at school, Tina and Sam try to make it up to Blaine but he’s inconsolable.
At the loft, Santana and Rachel bicker while Kurt tries to mediate. Kurt kills the band, leaving only himself, Dani (Demi Lovato) and Elliott as remaining members. Cut to their debut trio performance. Kurt announces their new name, One Three Hill, before they sing the Supremes‘ “The Happening.” Rachel shows up to the loft to get her last scented candle. She and Santana talk briefly before Elliott, Kurt and Dani arrive. Even though their icy feelings toward one another seem to have thawed slightly, they still show no signs of returning to being friends.
Back at high school, Blaine apologize to Tina and Sam. They return to glee club, where Tina, Sam and Blaine invite Artie (Kevin McHale) to join them in performing Wilson Phillips‘ “Hold On.”
Emma tells Will that she’s pregnant. And the moral of the story is, painting a nursery is the best way to prep your uterus to house a teeny, tiny baby.
